Nnaabagereka Urges Women to Use Leadership to Leave Lasting Legacies

The Nnaabagereka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda, has urged women across the Buganda Kingdom to make good use of the leadership positions they hold so they can leave a meaningful legacy for future generations.

She made the remarks while attending celebrations to mark International Women’s Day in Buganda, held in Mawokota County at Buwama in Mpigi District.

“I call upon all women to use the leadership positions they hold to leave a legacy and something meaningful that will inspire the generations that come after them,” Nnabagereka said.

Residents of Mawokota turned up in large numbers to welcome the Queen as she visited their county to join the celebrations for Women’s Day in Buganda.

This year’s main Buganda Kingdom celebrations were hosted in Mawokota County. The Queen arrived at around 10:00 a.m. and first visited Mbizi-Nnya Parish, where she toured several household projects including those of Fredrick Masagazi Masaazi and Josephine Nantume together with her husband Vicent Ssemanda. She later proceeded to the county playground where the main function was held.

The Queen was received by Buganda ministers including Mariam Mayanja Nkalubo and Choltilda Nakate, as well as Hassan Kasujja Kaggwa and several other leaders such as Teddy Nambooze.

Before the main ceremony began, the Queen toured exhibition stalls displaying products made by women, including handmade crafts, agricultural products and health-related initiatives.

The event officially began with prayers led by Rev. Fr. Fredrick Kikomeko, the Episcopal Vicar of the Mitala Maria Parish. Buganda women leaders, led by Florence Nasanga Musoke, the deputy head of Buganda women and county chief of Bulemeezi, together with Juliet Nammanda Ssenyomo, the Mawokota women leader, welcomed the Queen and presented a report on activities carried out by women in the county.

While delivering her annual message, the Queen thanked all those who attended and reminded them of this year’s theme.

“Women should work together and engage in activities that improve their livelihoods and benefit their communities,” she said.

She also encouraged women involved in business to embrace modern technology so they are not left behind.

“Those involved in business should adopt technology so that they keep up with the changing times and are not left behind,” she added.

On matters of health, the Queen urged people to prioritize regular medical check-ups and maintain healthy lifestyles through exercise.

“Take care of your health by going for regular medical check-ups and exercising to prevent diseases,” she said.

Buganda’s Minister for Gender and Environment, Mariam Mayanja Nkalubo, praised the Queen for empowering women and teaching them leadership and development skills.

Meanwhile, Mpigi District Woman MP Teddy Nambooze also commended the Queen for her continued efforts in empowering women and thanked the women of Mawokota for supporting the initiatives championed by the Nnabagereka.

The event attracted a wide range of participants including religious leaders, politicians and representatives from State House Uganda, represented by Joseph Saava Mukasa
